From: skirv@big-8.org (Tim Skirvin) Subject: [B8MB] State of Affairs - Proposals, Vice-Chair, Advisory Council Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups, news.groups Followup-To: news.groups Date: Thu, 18 May 2006 13:13:38 -0500 Reply-To: tskirvin@killfile.org It's about time for me to give a run-down of what's been going on on the Board list lately. So here we go: Proposal Status --------------- At the present time we are accepting proposals for new groups, with the understanding that the creation process may be revised as a result of what we learn by discussing the proposals. We regret any frustration that this may cause proponents and ask them to please bear with us as we shake the bugs out of the new system. Vice-Chair ---------- Dave Sill has been appointed Vice-Chair of the B8MB, which essentially means that he will do my job in my absence. Creation Process ---------------- We have followed the many threads in news.groups regarding our creation system, and have tried to come up with answers to the many questions that you have posed. We have come up with these documents: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:creation http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rfd http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=faqs:creation Instead of having all of the fine distinctions about the process incorporated into a single outline, we have tried to break the description of the process down into more easily digestible parts. The three pages taken together give a full picture of how we currently understand the creation process. Comments, corrections, and suggestions on how to improve the process and the presentation are most welcome. Mailing List ------------ We have moved our mailing list to board@big-8.org. If you need to contact us through email, please contact us through that list. Advisory Council ---------------- As many of you know, there has been an intense discussion in news.groups (and elsewhere) regarding the creation of an advisory council of proponents, moderators, and others. If created, this council might be empowered to elect the people to the B8MB or to veto Board decisions. The details, including the group name and powers, are still up in the air. The Board is observing and participating in these discussions, as well as discussing the topic among ourselves. When the discussion has run its course and we've had some time to consider the issue, we will decide whether to proceed with the establishment of such a council. If we decide to proceed, we will post a proposal for the structure and duties of the council and ask for additional feedback. In the meantime, we will continue to accept and handle proposals under the process we've previously announced. We do not think anything would be gained from delaying the work of the board while awaiting a decision about the Council. - Tim Skirvin (skirv@big-8.org) Chair, Big-8 Management Board -- http://www.big-8.org/ Big-8 Management Board http://www.killfile.org/~tskirvin/ Skirv's Homepage <FISH>< <*>
