SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION:

RATIONALE: remove news.announce.conferences

There have been no messages approved by the moderator of the newsgroup
since May 1997. However, since that time, there have been articles
cross-posted to other moderated newsgroups, which were approved by the
moderators of those other newsgroups. In addition, there have been
occasional self-approved articles. In recent years, over 95% of the
articles in the group have been approved by the moderator of
comp.parallel.

Because of the apparent continued interest in posting to the
newsgroup, it may be worthwhile to assign a new moderator to the
newsgroup. It should be noted that the previous moderator not only
approved articles, but maintained a searchable archive of postings on
a web page. This may be particularly useful for this group, given
that conference and CFP announcements are made several months before
the event or submission deadline will occur.

HISTORY:

The newsgroup mod.conferences was created in June 1986. In April 1987
it was renamed to news.announce.conferences as part of the Great
Renaming. Traffic built steadily to around 150 articles per month,
until an interruption occured in October 1996. After a short renewal
in April 1997, there have apparently been no approvals since May 1997.

Since 1997 there have been some cross-posted articles approved by
moderators of other newsgroups, as well as some self approvals. The
number of approvals over the past decade is less than in the first 10
months of 1996, prior to the first interruption in moderation.

DISTRIBUTION:

This document has been posted to the following newsgroups:

  news.announce.newgroups
  news.groups.proposals
  news.announce.conferences
  news.admin.announce

CHARTER:

The newsgroup line is:

|news.announce.conferences	Calls for papers and conference announcements.

Charter of news.announce.conferences (derived from FAQ:
'[news.announce.conferences] Frequently Asked Questions'):

[1.1] What types of announcements are posted to the newsgroup?

The newsgroup n.a.c is intended for announcements of conferences,
workshops, symposia, meetings, public lecture series, etc. They
usually fall into the categories of calls for papers or
abstracts, and calls for participation. In addition to this, I
also forward calls for papers from journals, and information on
specific mailing lists or other Internet resources carrying such
     announcements.
