From: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> Subject: RFD: remove news.announce.conferences moderated Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, news.announce.conferences, news.admin.announce Followup-To: news.groups Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2006 10:22:50 -0800 REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) remove news.announce.conferences This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated newsgroup news.announce.conferences. RATIONALE: remove news.announce.conferences There have been no messages approved by the moderator of the newsgroup since May 1997. However, since that time, there have been articles cross-posted to other moderated newsgroups, which were approved by the moderators of those other newsgroups. In addition, there have been occasional self-approved articles. In recent years, over 95% of the articles in the group have been approved by the moderator of comp.parallel. Because of the apparent continued interest in posting to the newsgroup, it may be worthwhile to assign a new moderator to the newsgroup. It should be noted that the previous moderator not only approved articles, but maintained a searchable archive of postings on a web page. This may be particularly useful for this group, given that conference and CFP announcements are made several months before the event or submission deadline will occur. HISTORY: The newsgroup mod.conferences was created in June 1986. In April 1987 it was renamed to news.announce.conferences as part of the Great Renaming. Traffic built steadily to around 150 articles per month, until an interruption occured in October 1996. After a short renewal in April 1997, there have apparently been no approvals since May 1997. Since 1997 there have been some cross-posted articles approved by moderators of other newsgroups, as well as some self approvals. The number of approvals over the past decade is less than in the first 10 months of 1996, prior to the first interruption in moderation. PROCEDURE: The full group removal procedure is documented here: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should subscribe to news.groups and participate in the relevant threads in that newsgroup. To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups. All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups. If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups as well. DISTRIBUTION: This document has been posted to the following newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups news.announce.conferences news.admin.announce PROPONENT: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> CHANGE HISTORY: 2006-11-08 1st RFD
