                      REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
                    remove comp.infosystems.announce

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the
newsgroup comp.infosystems.announce.

RATIONALE: remove comp.infosystems.announce

The last approved message was in January 1995. See History for details.

This group may be a candidate for revival with a new moderator. If there is a
new moderator, the group should avoid announcements about the WWW, and
concentrate on lesser known services such as Gopher, FTP, WAIS, and NNTP. That
the group and its moderator were swamped by WWW site anouncements may have led
to its demise.

HISTORY:

The newsgroup comp.infosystems.announce was created in January 1994. It was
originally proposed as comp.infosystems.gopher.announce, but was changed to a
more general scope as a result of discussion.

In practice, a large portion of its content of roughly 50 to 100 articles per
month were announcements of various websites.

During the latter part of its only year of activity,
comp.infosystems.www.announce was proposed. Part of the rationale for the new
group was that the moderator of comp.infosystem.announce was not making timely
approvals; and this was resulting in people posting website announcements to the
unmoderated comp.infosystems.www.* groups. An article was also posted urging
people to vote for the new groups, along with a claim that the moderator of
comp.infosystems.announce had been asked to participate, but had not responded.

One week after the first articles in comp.infosystems.www.announce were posted,
comp.infosystems.announce posted its last article.

PROCEDURE:

The full (draft) group removal procedure is documented here:

  http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup

Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should
subscribe to news.groups and participate in the relevant threads in that
newsgroup.

To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups.

All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups.

If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion
may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that
all discussion appears in news.groups as well.
