Within the rationale is a list of proposed groups that the inidividual RFD's would be posted. Please feel free to comment on those lists. RATIONALE: Remove low-traffic former INET groups. The INET distribution initially existed in parallel to (but within the namespace of) the regular Big 8 Distribution. Over time, leakage between the two distributions made them virtually indistinguishable. Nonetheless, their independent origins resulted in no checkgroups messages being issued for the main Big 8 distribution for several years. Since at least 1991, there have been proposals to formally move some of the more successful INET groups to the Big 8, but little ever ever came of this, perhaps due to indecision about which groups merited being moved. In October 2002, the moderators of news.announce.newgroups announced that the INET groups would be included in future checkgroups messages. This decision was made so as to facilitate issuance of checkgroups messages for the Big 8, rather than recognition of which INET groups had demonstrated traffic or interest. This proposal would remove 31 of the the former INET groups that have little or no traffic, and in some cases overlap or duplicate newsgroups in the main Big-8 distribution. PROCEDURE: The full (draft) group removal procedure is documented here: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should subscribe to news.groups and participate in the relevant threads in that newsgroup. To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups. All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups. If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups as well. This proposal has not been posted to any of the groups proposed for removal from the Big 8 newsgroups list. Since at least 1991, there have been proposals to formally move some of the more successful INET groups to the Big 8, but nothing ever ever came of this, perhaps due to indecision about which groups merited being moved. At least 7 groups have been added to the main Big 8 distribution by the voting process: comp.sys.handhelds (passed vote, but list not updated) comp.org.eff.news comp.org.eff.talk comp.windows.x.announce news.software.nntp comp.editors soc.culture.esperanto In October 2002, the moderators of news.announce.newgroups announced that the INET groups would be included in future checkgroups messages. A pointer to this RFD will be posted to comp.terminals.bitgraph, comp.terminals.tty5620, and comp.terminals. ******************************************************************************** RATIONALE: remove comp.theory.dynamic-sys remove comp.theory.self-org-sys The newsgroup lines are: |comp.theory.dynamic-sys Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems. |comp.theory.self-org-sys Topics related to self-organization. comp.theory.dynamic-sys and comp.theory.self-org-sys have had one discussion thread "*Real* Distributed Computing" cross-posted between the two groups and several other groups including comp.distributed, comp.object, comp.theory.cell-automata, and comp.theory. It is improbable that participation was coming from either of the two groups. comp.theory.self-org-sys had a discussion thread "I need an email calendar for non-profit org" cross-posted to alt.management, alt.office.management, soc.org.nonprofit. It is not clear whether the originator wanted the calendar software to help him self-organize, or he thought a self-organization was similar to a non-profit-organization. Both groups also get quite a bit of conference and similar announcements, but no discussion of their own. A pointer to this RFD will be posted to comp.theory.self-org-sys, comp.theory.dynamic-sys, comp.theory, and comp.ai.alife. PROCEDURE: Those who wish to comment on this request to remove these 31 newsgroups should subscribe to news.groups and participate in the relevant threads in that newsgroup. To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups. All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups. If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups as well. The full (draft) group removal procedure is documented here: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup DISTRIBUTION: This RFD has been posted to the following newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups The proponent will post pointers to the RFD to the newsgroups proposed for removal.
