                      REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
                       remove soc.religion.gnosis

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated
newsgroup soc.religion.gnosis.

RATIONALE: remove soc.religion.gnosis

The last approval was in December 2000. Approvals in 2000 were often
sporaradic.

Possible actions include:

(1) Revive the group with a new moderator.

(2) Convert the group to an unmoderated status.

(3) Remove the group.

There is an equivalent unmoderated newsgroup (alt.religion.gnostic),
so an unmoderated soc.religion.gnosis may be redundant.

HISTORY:

The newsgroup soc.religion.gnosis was created in July 1994. An
earlier creation effort in November 1993 had narrowly missed the
required +100 plurality (151:56). It approvals until December 2000.
Traffic was often relatively light, with around 5 articles per week.

CHARTER:

The newsgroup line is:

|soc.religion.gnosis	Gnosis, marifat, jnana & direct sacred experience.

The charter (from a periodic posting to the newsgroup):

The purpose of 'soc.religion.gnosis' is to provide a place for
the serious discussion and exchange of questions, ideas, experience,
views, and information about of the historical and contemporary
trends, techniques. practice and development of gnosis and
gnosticism, its related literature, and corresponding concepts
such as satvika-jnana (Sanskrit), Ma'rifat (Arabic), and certain
associated aspects of mystical ecstasy. Gnosis is the direct
experience or 'knowledge' of the fullness of the Divine Being. It
focuses on the illumination of the spirit by the realms beyond the
physical and psychic levels. Everyone is invited to take part in
this discussion.

PROCEDURE:

The full group removal procedure is documented here:

  http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup

Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should
subscribe to news.groups.proposals and participate in the relevant threads
in that newsgroup.

To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to
news.groups.proposals.

All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups.proposals.

If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion
may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that
all discussion appears in news.groups.proposals as well.

DISTRIBUTION:

This document has been posted to the following newsgroups:

  news.announce.newgroups
  news.groups.proposals
