From: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> Subject: RFD: remove soc.culture.pakistan.moderated moderated Newsgroups: soc.culture.pakistan, news.announce.newgroups, soc.culture.pakistan.moderated, news.groups.proposals Followup-To: news.groups.proposals Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2007 11:14:23 -0500 Organization: http://www.big-8.org/ REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) remove soc.culture.pakistan.moderated This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated newsgroup soc.culture.pakistan.moderated. RATIONALE: remove soc.culture.pakistan.moderated Note: There are separate RFD's proposing the removal of soc.culture.pakistan.moderated, soc.culture.pakistan.education, and soc.culture.pakistan.history. It is not necessary that all 3 groups share the same fate. It is conceivable that one group be removed, one converted to an unmoderated status, and one assigned a new moderator. The last approved article submitted to soc.culture.pakistan.moderated occured in June 1998. Over the next year, there were about a dozen approved articles cross-posted across the entire soc.culture.pakistan hierarchy that were not specific to soc.culture.pakistan.moderated. There also were continued posting of FAQ's and similar materials. If soc.culture.pakistan.moderated were removed, discussion of culture in Pakistan could continue to occur in the unmoderated soc.culture.pakistan (SCP), and where topical, in the unmoderated SCP.politics, SCP.religion, and SCP.sports. Alternatives include: (1) Removal of soc.culture.pakistan.moderated. (2) Assignment of a new moderator. It may be feasible to simply block cross-posts and do spam filtering. (3) Because of its name, it is not appropriate to convert soc.culture.pakistan.moderated to an unmoderated status. In addition it would be redundant to the unmoderated soc.culture.pakistan. HISTORY: The newsgroup soc.culture.pakistan.moderated was created in June 1996 as part of a re-organization of the soc.culture.pakistan (SCP) hierarchy that included creation of the moderated groups SCP.moderated, SCP.education, and SCP.history; and the unmoderated groups SCP.politics, SCP.religion, and SCP.sports. The re-organization required about 9 months, including a re-vote due to irregularites during the first CFV. The newsgroup soc.culture.pakistan was created in March 1990. There was a proposal to convert the group to a moderated status in February 1991, but it never proceeded to a vote. During the two year active period of soc.culture.pakistan.moderated from June 1996 to June 1998, there were roughly 40 threads per month. A large share of the content were reposts from the Pakistan News Service, rather than user initiated discussion. The last approvals specific to soc.culture.pakistan.moderated were in June 1998. There were about a dozen approvals widely cross-posted across the soc.culture.pakistan hierarchy the following year. In addition, there were continued posting of FAQ's and other guidelines that continued through 2006. CHARTER: The newsgroup line is: soc.culture.pakistan.moderated Discussions on Pakistan. The charter (extracted from the CFV): The newsgroup will be for carrying on discussions on Pakistan in a moderated environment. All topics not covered by other newsgroups in soc.culture.hierarchy are welcome. The moderation will keep the discussion relevant to Pakistan. This is an alternate for readers wishing to take part in discussions without high noise to signal ratio. PROCEDURE: The full group removal procedure is documented here: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should subscribe to news.groups.proposals and participate in the relevant threads in that newsgroup. To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups.proposals. All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups.proposals. If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups.proposals as well. DISTRIBUTION: This document has been posted to the following newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups.proposals soc.culture.pakistan.moderated soc.culture.pakistan The proponent will also post pointers to: soc.culture.pakistan.politics soc.culture.pakistan.religion soc.culture.pakistan.sports PROPONENT: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> CHANGE HISTORY: 2007-04-14 1st RFD
