From: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> Subject: RFD: remove comp.sources.misc Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, comp.sources.misc, comp.sources.d Followup-To: news.groups Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2006 11:51:54 -0700 REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) remove comp.sources.misc This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated newsgroup comp.sources.misc. RATIONALE: Remove comp.sources.misc The last approved message was in April 1995. There are other more suitable means of distributing program sources, so this comp.sources.misc is not a suitable candidate for conversion to an unmoderated newsgroup. HISTORY: The newsgroup comp.sources.misc was created in April 1987 to replace the unmoderated newsgroup net.sources. The charter (from the monthly informational posting) was: This newsgroup is not for large programs which belong in other sources groups; it is for sources which do not fit elsewhere (for example, MS-DOS and VMS non-game sources) and for the small stuff -- for example, your favorite shell script to set your prompt or etc. -- the little stuff that just doesn't warrant submission to comp.sources.unix (formerly mod.sources), where it'd look a bit silly next to the latest version of Xterm.... As a result, there will be no archiving of most sources, and the group will be run in an informal fashion. In general, *anything* will be accepted, but -- (1) Sources that belong elsewhere will be submitted to another newsgroup. This will primarily be done with large programs, which will be forwarded to comp.sources.unix. The determinant for this is whether it has more than one source file or not. (2) Discussion will be routed to comp.sources.d rather than cluttering this newsgroup. PROCEDURE: The full (draft) group removal procedure is documented here: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should subscribe to news.groups and participate in the relevant threads in that newsgroup. To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups. All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups. If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups as well. DISTRIBUTION: This RFD has been posted to the following newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups comp.sources.misc comp.sources.d PROPONENT: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> CHANGE HISTORY: 2006-06-26 Slightly reformatted and posted to NAN 2006-06-16 Original RFD.
