From: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> Subject: RFD: remove comp.sources.postscript Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, comp.sources.postscript, comp.lang.postscript Followup-To: news.groups Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2006 11:52:35 -0700 REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) remove comp.sources.postscript This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated newsgroup comp.sources.postscript. RATIONALE: Remove comp.sources.postscript The last approved message was in March 1997. There are other more suitable means of distributing program sources, so this comp.sources.postscript is not a suitable candidate for conversion to an unmoderated newsgroup. HISTORY: The newsgroup comp.sources.postscript was created in February 1993, with the first posting in March 1993. The charter (from the CFV) was: PURPOSE A sources group where PostScript programs of generally useful graphic images and PostScript-related utilities can be posted. CONTENT Source code written in the PostScript language would be appropriate. Fonts and programs in other languages that involve PostScript directly and heavily would be appropriate also. Clip Art: Hand-made PostScript programs, converted binaries, or the machine generated output from a drawing tools, representing a graphical image meant to be included in documents. (Other art would usually be fine.) Utilities: Hand-made PostScript programs either demonstrating or facilitating use of the PostScript graphics language. This would include PostScript generating programs and other tools not written in PostScript. Examples: "How-to" examples would be encouraged. Fonts: Fonts that can be used with the PostScript language. The focus will be on generally useful programs or art. Specific information, such as a new weathermap in PostScript posted daily, is more like a binary than a source, and would not be appropriate. Text documents formatted in PostScript would not be appropriate. EPS conversion, DSC conformance, and commented code would be facilitated and encouraged, but not required. PROCEDURE: The full (draft) group removal procedure is documented here: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should subscribe to news.groups and participate in the relevant threads in that newsgroup. To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups. All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups. If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups as well. DISTRIBUTION: This RFD has been posted to the following newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups comp.sources.postscript comp.lang.postscript PROPONENT: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> CHANGE HISTORY: 2006-06-26 Slightly reformatted and posted to NAN 2006-06-16 Original RFD.
