RATIONALE: remove comp.unix.bsd.386bsd.announce The group was created in February 1995. It has never had any approved messages by its moderator. See History for details. Note: This proposal would have NO effect on the moderated announcement groups: comp.unix.bsd.bsdi.announce comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.announce comp.unix.bsd.netbsd.announce comp.unix.bsd.openbsd.announce All are inactive at present. If you are interested in revitalizing any of these groups, you should contact the Big 8 Management Board. HISTORY: The newsgroup comp.unix.bsd.386bsd.announce was created in February 1995 as part of the re-organization of the comp.unix.bsd.* hierarchy. Prior to that, discussion of 386BSD operating system had taken place in the comp.os.386bsd.* hierarchy. In addition, the hierarchy had become the de facto place for discussing other BSD Unix variants including FreeBSD, NetBSD, and BSD/OS by BSDI. By the time of the re-organization, active development of 386BSD had stopped, and some of the other Unix BSD variants were being targetted to non-Intel-x86 based platforms. The name of the hierarchy had become misleading. The re-organization created the comp.unix.bsd.bsdi.*, comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.*, and comp.unix.bsd.netbsd.* branches (an .announce and .misc discussion group in each branch). The comp.unix.bsd.openbsd.* branch was added in 1997. In addition, comp.os.386bsd.announce was renamed to comp.unix.386bsd.announce. However, its moderator switched to become moderator of comp.unix.bsd.netbsd.announce (the comp.os.386bsd.announce group had been used for NetBSD announcements). Similarly, the five unmoderated comp.os.386bsd.* discussion groups were collectively renamed and merged into a single comp.unix.386bsd.misc unmoderated discussion group. The primary purpose of these renamings was to eliminate potential orphaned groups, as much as creating a place for announcements and discussion about 386BSD, while at the same time creating better named groups that were focused on the BSD Unix variants under active development.
