From: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> Subject: RFD: remove comp.archives moderated Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups, comp.archives.admin, news.groups.proposals, comp.sources.d, comp.archives Followup-To: news.groups.proposals Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2007 11:08:32 -0600 Organization: http://www.big-8.org/ REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) remove comp.archives This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated newsgroup comp.archives. RATIONALE: remove comp.archives The newsgroup has not had any approvals since October 1997. There had been a substantial decline in traffic over its last couple of years, perhaps triggered by the creation of comp.archives.ms-windows.announce in July 1996. There is almost no discussion in the unmoderated comp.archives.admin (the group is intended for discussion about administration of archives, rather than the content of the archives). Announce of archives for specific operating systems, programming languages, etc. may continue to occur in groups specific to those operating systems and languages. HISTORY: The newsgroup comp.archives was created in November 1998. At the time, there was discussion of creation of a moderated announcement group and an unmoderated discussion group, but this never occured. In May 1991, the unmoderated comp.archives was created for discussion about the administration of archives. Groups specific for MS-DOS (comp.archives.msdos.{announce|d}) and MS-Windows (comp.archives.ms-windows.{announce|discuss}) were created in December 1992 and July 1996, respectively. The last approval for comp.archives was in October 1997. PROCEDURE: The full group removal procedure is documented here: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should subscribe to news.groups.proposals and participate in the relevant threads in that newsgroup. To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups.proposals. All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups.proposals. If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups.proposals as well. DISTRIBUTION: This document has been posted to the following newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups.proposals comp.archives comp.archives.admin comp.sources.d The proponent will also post pointers to: comp.archives.msdos.d comp.archives.ms-windows.discuss PROPONENT: Jim Riley <jimrtex@pipeline.com> CHANGE HISTORY: 2007-01-11 1st RFD
