From: The Big-8 Management Board <board@big-8.org> Subject: 2nd RFD: remove comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.announce moderated (LAST CALL FOR COMMENTS) Newsgroups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.adventure, news.announce.newgroups, comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical, news.groups.proposals, comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.announce Followup-To: news.groups.proposals Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2007 11:05:08 -0500 Organization: http://www.big-8.org/ REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) remove comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.announce This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated newsgroup comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.announce. PROCEDURE: The B8MB plans to begin voting on this proposal after five days. Please offer any final discussion or comments before the end of this waiting period. Voting may take up to one week (7 days); a result will be posted following the end of the voting period. All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.proposals. The full group removal procedure is documented here: http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION: No comments were received. RATIONALE: remove comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.announce The last approved was in January 2000. For the final two years of activity, all articles were "Internet PC Game Charts". The Game Charts were apparently posted and approved by their author (presumably with consent of the regular moderator). The last Game Chart (number 369) announced the impending launch of a web site dedicated to the charts. The last approval of an ordinary article was in August 1998. There had been a previous interruption from May 1996 to November 1996, in which only the Game Charts had been approved. While the group was active, approvals were roughly 1 to 2 per day, though it appears that approvals were often batched with many occuring on the same day. If there is an interested person, the group could be assigned a new moderator. There may enough interest to justify reactivating the group. On the other hand, perhaps posters and readers have gotten out of the habit of using comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.announce, and moved on to web-based forums. HISTORY: The newsgroup comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.announce was created in April 1993 as part of a reorganization of the comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.* (CSIPG) hierarchy, that saw creation of CSIPG.announce, CSIPG.action, CSIPG.adventure, CSIPG.flight-sim, CSIPG.rpg, CSIPG.strategic, and CSIPG.misc (rename of comp.sys.ibm.pc.games). Subsequently, the following groups in the hierarchy were created CSIPG.marketplace, CSIPG.naval, CSIPG.space-sim, CSIPG.sports, and CSIPG.wat-historical. Approvals averaged one to two approvals per day for most of the active period of the group (this is an average rate, since approvals were often batches). There was an interruption of regular approvals from May 1996 to November 1996, and a stoppage beginning in August 1998 until the present. During the initial interruption, and continuing until January 2000, there were weekly posts of "Internet PC Game Charts". There have been no approvals of any sort since January 2000.
