                      REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
            remove rec.games.online.mmorpg.world-of-warcraft

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the unmoderated
newsgroup rec.games.online.mmorpg.world-of-warcraft.

PROCEDURE:

The B8MB plans to begin voting on this proposal after five days. Please
offer any final discussion or comments before the end of this waiting
period. Voting may take up to one week (7 days); a result will be posted
following the end of the voting period.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.proposals.

The full group removal procedure is documented here:

SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION:

Most respondents were in favor of the proposal to remove this group.
Jim Riley opposes the proposal because (1) alt groups should be
considered irrelevant until the B8MB maintains a canonical list of
them, and (2) the group provides an example for other online/MMORPG
games. Doug Freyburger contends that removing RGOMWOW will compound
the error of creating it because it has on-topic traffic. All
alt.games.warcraft users who responded were in favor in removing
RGOMWOW.

While the creation of Big 8 groups isn't automatically precluded in
cases where there's a group for the same topic in another hierarchy
such as alt, if the users of the existing group oppose the creation of
the Big 8 group, their opinion should not be overruled lightly. As for
the example that RGOMWOW sets for other potential online/MMORPG
groups, I don't think that's a strong enough reason to retain the
group. Finally, regarding the issue of removing an active group,
there's very little evidence that RGOMWOW is active, independent of
alt.games.warcraft, so removing it as soon as possible will minimize
the damage caused by its creation and removal.

RATIONALE: remove rec.games.online.mmorpg.world-of-warcraft

This newsgroup was created as part of a trial "bulk creation" newsgroup
creation process, in which "obvious" newsgroups were created without
specific proponents or charters. Subsequent to the group's creation, it
was discovered that an active group, alt.games.warcraft, already exists
for this topic. In order to prevent fragmention of the Usenet WOW
community, I propose that the newly-created
rec.games.online.mmorpg.world-of-warcraft be removed before it's widely
propagated and established.
