From: Steve Bonine <spb@pobox.com> Subject: Moderator Vacancy Investigation: sci.techniques.mass-spec Date: Sun, 29 May 2011 09:24:13 EDT Message-ID: <94evbfFeu2U5@mid.individual.net> MODERATOR VACANCY INVESTIGATION (MVI) moderated group sci.techniques.mass-spec This is a formal Moderator Vacancy Investigation (MVI), begun because moderated newsgroup sci.techniques.mass-spec is not functioning, and has been closed by its moderator. This investigation may result in the removal of the group or the selection and installation of a new moderator. In practice, the Big-8 Management Board considers the third alternative -- changing the status of the group from moderated to unmoderated -- as likely to cause more harm than good. NEWSGROUPS LINE: sci.techniques.mass-spec All areas of mass spectrometry. (Moderated) RATIONALE: On December 27, 2010 the moderator, David Boswick, closed the newsgroup. <ifbiu6$o8c$1@news-int.gatech.edu>. DISTRIBUTION: news.announce.newgroups news.groups.proposals sci.techniques.mass-spec sci.misc CHARTER Sci.techniques.mass-spec will be open to discussion of all areas of mass spectrometry. Topics may include, but are not limited to: Ionization Mass analysis Mechanisms Hyphenated techniques Troubleshooting Short commercial announcements will be allowed, but the newsgroup is not meant to be a substitute for the normal announcements, and long, detailed descriptions of new or improved equipment should not be submitted. To quote from the Moderator's Handbook, the policy should be, "Information, not promotion." Similarly, the newsgroup is not a substitute for peer-reviewed journals. HISTORY OF THE GROUP: The newsgroup was moderately active from its founding in June 1995 until mid 2005. Georgia Tech decommissioned its news server at the end of 2010 at which point the group was closed. PROPONENT: Steve Bonine <spb@pobox.com> PROCEDURE: Those who wish to comment on this moderator vacancy investigation should subscribe to news.groups.proposals and participate in the relevant threads in that newsgroup. To this end, the followup header of this MVI has been set to news.groups.proposals.
